The people have finally purged, through democratic elections, the post-communist machine that was never held to account or reformed after 1989. After 26 years of the legacy corrupt system’s culture of self-interested and fraudulent behavior, and a spoils-system “business-as-usual” government having flourished, the people emphatically said “No more!”

Przeczytałem, podzieliłem się z kolegą po drugiej stronie Atlantyku. Niech wie, jaka jest prawda, niech mu New York Times czy inny Washington Post w głowie nie mieszają, o CNN już nie mówiąc. Odpowiedział, jak się spodziewałem, że ten język trochę dziwny (odd language). To napisz konkretnie, mówię. A on, spokojnie przeczytawszy, w te słowa do mnie się zwraca:
The article takes the position that the new government represents the fullest manifestation of Polish democracy. And the present situation is contrasted with the previous "post-communist machine." But a closer look at the article's language reveals the extent to which the author is helplessly controlled by communist rhetoric.
Calling the arguments of one's opponents "propaganda" is, of course, a familiar rhetorical ploy from the Party toolbox. Still, I wonder to what extent the invisible hand of communist rhetoric guides the phrase, "The people have finally purged, through democratic elections..." After all, in English, at least in the political sense, the verb "to purge" is almost exclusively used to describe how Communist leaders eliminated their opposition. For example, "Stalin 'purged' his enemies." How striking it is, then, to see the author attack the previous government as a continuation of pre-1989 communism, while himself revealing his own indebtedness to the language and rhetorical strategies of that very period. Are "the people" the new Stalin?
Matthew Tyrmand prowadzony „niewidzialną ręką komunistycznej retoryki”, toż ś.p. Ojciec się w grobie przewróci! Przeprowadzający atak na poprzedników PIS-u u władzy jako „kontynuatorów komunizmu” posługując się przy tym językiem i strategią retoryki żywcem z tegoż komunizmu wziętymi!
